Dave Ohlsen

Photography has been an important part of Dave’s life for the past 40 years. Starting with a Hawkeye Instamatic camera at the age of 10 he began a journey with his photography that was to become a life long passion. Over the years as he studied his craft and his skills developed, he moved from 35mm film, to medium format, and eventually to digital capture.

Love of the outdoors, and photography's unique integration of art and technology has made this the perfect medium for his artistic pursuits. Digital photography has reinvigorated old passions as he has become consumed by the seemingly unlimited creative nature of the digital image.

Dave approaches his digital art from a "minimalist" perspective, feeling that less is often more when capturing the essence and subtleties of nature.  Digital editing is generally done minimally to convey with accuracy what Dave envisioned as he released the shutter on his camera. Some editing may be done to manage broad tonalities that the eye can see, yet the camera is still unable to capture accurately. 

All of the images on this web site have been taken over the past few years with Canon digital equipment. His Canon optics provided a range from 17mm to 1200mm for these images. Dave prints these images with Epson printers and archival Epson UltraChrome inks. These archival prints will retain the original colors for 75 or more years.

Over the past 4 years Dave has made 4 trips to Africa in the pursuit of fine art photographic images of the people, landscapes and wildlife of this exotic land. In July of 2006 Dave began for the first time sharing these images with the public and has quickly become recognized for his art, having been acknowledged with numerous awards and exhibitions.

Dave just returned from his 4th trip to Africa,  this time to Botswana and the exotic Okavango Delta.  Check back on this site for new images from this region  by the end of 2007!
